CHAPTER 11

The sudden sound of the doorbell startled Suzanah. She peeked out and saw her love waiting. Talking and opening the door at the same time, she asked, “Alex, where the heck have you been? Dinner was done hours ago.” Standing before her was a man perspiring and out of breath, pain in his eyes and a perplexed look on his face.

“What’s—what’s wrong, darling?”

He took her by the forearms, gently drawing her closer to him. “Suzanah, why didn’t you tell me?”

“Tell you what?”

“About your life and what went on in Michigan.”

She jerked away from him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Tell me the truth, Suzanah. What happened to you there?”

Tears streaked her face. “Why is my life in Michigan so important to you suddenly? I told you about my family, and believe me, it’s not worth repeating.”

“I’m not talking about your family. I’m talking about you.”

She wiped the tears away and confronted him. “Okay, maybe my life there wasn’t so great. So what?”

“Level with me. Tell me what I need to know.”

“Alex, can’t you just love me for who I am now?”

He took her back into his arms, kissing her cheek. “I love you no matter what, but for us to have any kind of a lasting relationship, it’s got to be built on trust. I want you to feel free to tell me anything, no matter how horrible you think it is. I won’t break, Suzanah.”

She moved away from him and slumped down on the couch. “You start then. Tell me what you know and how you know it.”

“Is that what you want? For me to start baring the details of your life?”

“Alex, I haven’t a clue as to what you’re getting at. Besides, what else can you possibly know about me other than what I have already told you?”

“Suzanah, please. Don’t you realize that I have ways of finding things out? Nothing stays at rest forever.”

Her face jerked back to his. “Nothing stays at rest? Alex, what are you getting at?”

He softened his tone, not wanting to badger her as if she were a witness in one of his court cases. No, he wanted to be gentle with this mystery woman that he had fallen so hard for. He sat next to her and took her hand. “Suzanah, just tell me what’s going on with you. I know you had a bad marriage. I’m not asking you to rehash any of that, but I know some things went on before you were married.”

“Do you know who I was married to, because if you—”

“I have no idea, and I don’t want to. I do know something went on with you. I just want to be let in.”

“What did you do? Have my background checked?”

“I would never do that, and you know it. Kate had you investigated and told me everything. She asked me to come over and get my boxes, and she told me there was a special envelope inside one box and that it was about you.”
